Un-Convention is an innovative and highly acclaimed grassroots music conference and festival. Started by a group of independent record labels, their first event was held in Salford in 2008. Since then they have held events all over the globe. I have worked with Un-Convention on all their UK graphic design from their inception in 2008, creating bespoke identities for each event.

The samples shown are identities and programme double-page spreads for some of their events in Manchester, Preston and Salford.

Piccadilly Records is one of the worlds leading independent record shops. In 2013 I was commissioned by Piccadilly to design a new logo that reflected their Mancunian heritage, as well as their status as an underground, anti-corporate record shop that is admired and respected all over the globe. The symbol is a loose interpretation of the manchester skyline that also resembles a stack of records and CD's.

Along with the logo, a wider branding scheme has been applied to the shop front, point of sale banners, slip mats and various other pieces of merchandise.

The Piccadilly Records end of year review is an annual publication covering the years best album releases, with artist interviews, record reviews and staff charts. Along with an A5 review booklet, the shop also releases a compilation album of artists featured in the charts, along with various items of merchandise. I have designed every Piccadilly review since 2009, during which time it has become one of the most eagerly anticipated magazines in the independent music calendar.

Hikerdelic is a clothing brand that joins the dots between hiking and psychedelia, rambling and raving, the country estate and the council estate. It’s main strapline is ‘from Peak to Precinct’, and with this concept in mind, I created several graphics for use on T-shirts, bags and various other items of merchandise. The designs reference music, popular culture, the great outdoors and the urban environment.

The Royal Exchange is Manchester’s most prestigious theatre. In partnership with Bruntwood, they organise and judge the annual Bruntwood Prize, the UK’s biggest national playwriting competition, a search for great new plays by writers of any level of experience.

To promote the 2019 competition, I created a typographic design using stylized punctuation marks, with a question mark to represent the novice writer who may be unsure of how to turn their ideas into a working play, and an exclamation mark for the experienced writer who feels ready to make an impact, but may need some help developing their play.

The designs were applied to printed flyers, posters, on digital displays outside the theatre and across social media. They also formed the basis of the design for the awards night programme and posters.

Progress Running Club is a clothing brand based in London with franchises in Australia and Japan. Inspired by retro athletics graphics, shown here are several t-shirt and merchandise designs I have created for PRC.

Progress is a multi-purpose space in North East London incorporating a clothes shop, photography studio, community hub and fashion showroom. I was asked to design a logo, stationery and various items of merchandise for the new venture by it’s creators - the apparel consultancy Brand Progression Ltd.

Elvis Jesus is a clothing brand based in Manchester. The designs shown here were created in 2005 for a collection themed around retro arcade games, and a series of t-shirts celebrating youth sub-cultures. Also shown is a repeat-pattern fabric design created for the brand.

football shirt design

West Didsbury & Chorlton FC is a non-league football club based in South Manchester. I was asked to design a shirt for their womens team, with a brief that it should reflect the clubs inclusive, socially progressive outlook. The rainbow graphic also forms a letter W, referencing the club’s nickname ‘West’.

The sleeves of the shirt also feature the logo I designed for the women’s team sponsor, Piccadilly Records.

Cheadle Hulme School is a secondary school in Stockport, Greater Manchester. In Summer 2020 I was asked by CHS to design the latest edition of their newsletter for parents. With a new title of ‘CHS Rewind’ in reference to the schools podcast series, and also as a reference to the idea of looking back over the previous term, I developed a graphic style around rewinding arrows that was used as the basis for the design.

Jazz North is an organisation that supports young musicians in the U.K. I was asked to create an identity for their Northern Line programme — a live touring support scheme, aimed specifically at artists from the north of England, helping them to deliver high quality live shows on profile-raising stages. The identity included a new logo, a print campaign including posters and flyers, plus a social media advertising campaign.

Steve Trafford is a musician and composer from Manchester. Formerly of The Fall and a co-writer for Paul Heaton, Steve recorded a new album in 2022 and I was asked to create artwork and a visual identity for him.

The designs were inspired by Steve’s lyrics and formed a social media campaign along with being used for single and album artwork.

The Record Café is a hugely popular bar, record shop and charcuterie in Bradford, West Yorkshire. Shown here are posters designed for various events at the bar since it opened in November 2014, along with t-shirt designs and a beer pump clip designed for their third birthday.

In September 2019 Manchester’s iconic music venue Band on the Wall celebrated it’s tenth year anniversary since re-opening. Named as B10TW as play on the venues initials, I was asked to create an identity for the celebratory season including a logo, listings flyer, posters for print and social media, and a can design for their Dizzy Juice beer, brewed specially for the anniversary in collaboration with Salford brewery First Chop.

Cabasa is a vibrant carnival arts organisation based in Mossley, Greater Manchester. I was asked to redesign all of Cabasa’s branding in 2020.

The logo I created is a group of stick figures, posed to suggest dancing and performance. The figures are arranged in a manner that resembles the beads on a cabasa — the percussion instrument that the company is named after.

Along with the main Cabasa logo, I was also asked to create four sub-brand logos for the companies varied range of activities.

In addition to the logo and print elements, I also wrote a short brand guidelines manual for future use.

Band on the Wall is one of the UK's most highly-regarded live music venues and has has been a staple of the Manchester music scene since the 1930's. It closed for renovation in 2001 and re-opened to much excitement in 2009. I was commissioned to design a new brand identity, including exterior signage and all the literature for the relaunch, and have continued to work regularly with the venue since then.

The examples shown are signage design and various posters, flyers, billboards and banners from 2009 to the present day.

Contact is a contemporary arts organisation based in Manchester that places young people at the heart of everything they do. A theatre, gallery, music venue and bar rolled into one, it is one of the city's most innovative spaces.

I began working with Contact in 2009 after winning a pitch to design their season listings print. I have worked with them regularly since then, designing their quarterly 32 page listings brochures, as well as brand identities for specific projects and accompanying printed materials.

The Albany is an acclaimed performing arts centre in Croydon with a rich history and outstanding reputation for developing young creative talent. I have been working with the venue on a regular basis since 2014. 

The examples shown here are posters, flyers and leaflets for various events including theatrical productions, live music events and youth workshops.

Manchester Hill was an area of strategic importance in Northern France during the First World War, which was given its name after being captured in April 1917 by the 2nd Battalion of the Manchester Regiment.

As part of Manchester Cathedral’s remembrance events in 2018, I was commissioned to re-design six postcards that were originally sent home by troops from the region during the First World War.

Shown here are the six original designs, with the re-designed versions below. The new designs were given away as souvenir postcards to Manchester Cathedral’s visitors throughout November 2018.

Brighter Sound is a Manchester-based producer of creative music workshops and events. Each Brighter Sound event is uniquely themed - from open mic night Sing City to Shake Rattle & Roll, a workshop for parents and toddlers. 

I have been commissioned by Brighter Sound on numerous occasions to create identities for individual projects that reflect the nature of the event, whilst maintaining their core brand style. The examples shown here are Annual Review pages, as well as flyers and posters from some of their events.

The Blue Pig is an independent bar in Manchester's Northern Quarter.

I was commissioned by them on two seperate occasions to design menus that would reflect the bar's edgy, late-night drinking-den feel.

In 2017 I worked with Community Arts North West and Petrus - a homelessness charity based in Rochdale - on the development of a visual identity for their Hidden Tales project. Hidden Tales was a unique digital art trail showcasing poetry and films created by people involved with Petrus.

Along with the overall branding and print literature I was also tasked with creating artworks to accompany poems written by members of the Petrus community. The artworks were displayed as part of a digital art trail across Rochdale town centre throughout Autumn 2017.

Inner City Music is a live music promotion team based in Manchester. Predominantly responsible for gigs at Band on the Wall, they also arrange concerts throughout the UK. The examples shown here are posters for gigs at various venues across the country.

Global Grooves brings inspirational carnival practice from around the world into communities across the north.

I have worked with Global Grooves on numerous design projects, creating brand identities and marketing materials for many of their festivals, workshops and carnival events.

Lyric Hammersmith is one of the UK's leading producing theatres, producing the highest quality contemporary theatre, alongside nurturing the creativity of young people.

I have worked regularly with Lyric on their print materials since early 2018. Examples shown here are brochure covers and double-page spreads for their Young Lyric classes programme, flyers and posters for shows and events, along with leaflet designs for their Evolution programme.

The Vale is an arts centre in a converted cotton mill in Mossley, Greater Manchester. I have worked with the venue a regular basis since 2015. Shown here is the opening season listings brochure with die cut cover revealing a painting by local artist Chris Cyprus, along with accompanying posters. Also shown are flyers for Vale Sounds, a project from 2020 aimed at local musicians aged 16-25.

In Place of War (IPOW) is a project based within the University of Manchester that researches creativity in sites of armed conflict.

I have worked on several design projects for In Place of War. Shown here are a series of illustrations, flyers and poster designs for some of their events.

Community Arts North West (CAN) is a Manchester-based arts organisation working with urban communities of all ages and backgrounds, across Greater Manchester.

I work regularly with CAN on the design of posters and flyers for their theatre, music and visual arts events.

Manchester Histories delivers projects, events and activities that celebrate Greater Manchester's diverse histories and heritage.

Hidden Histories, Hidden Historians was an exhibition by five Manchester community groups who researched their own hidden histories, taking them on a journey to becoming historians.

I was commissioned to design the identity for the project, including the main exhibition panels in Manchester's Central Library, creating a sweeping montage of the project participants. Along with the main exhibition, a series of PDF toolkits were designed to provide guidance for budding historians, and later in the year, a brochure summarising the outcomes of the project.

Let's Go is a Community Interest Company that delivers arts and media training throughout the North West.

I have worked on numerous design projects for Let's Go including infographics, stationery, annual reports, posters and leaflets. 

Along with projects for the company itself, I have also designed bespoke logos, branding and printed literature for many of their innovative side-projects — shown here are samples of work for Let's Go's main company, as well as Big Digital Project, Poppy, and See it Say it Do it.

Xtra Mile Events is an athletics events company based in Cheshire. They specialise in triathlons and duathlons, running annual events throughout the North of England and Wales.

In 2008 I was approached by the then fledgling company to design their logo and stationery. I have subsequently designed all printed literature, promotional merchandise and signage for all their races since, during which time they have risen to become one of the most successful athletics events companies in the UK.

The Asics Greater Manchester Marathon was recently voted the best marathon in the UK at The Running Awards. 

I have worked on the design of all elements for the marathon since it started in 2012, including logo design, advertising, event signage, leaflets, posters, medal design, t-shirt design, start/finish gantries, finish line branding, and merchandise.

The Roundhouse in London is one of the worlds most famous music venues. I initially worked with The Roundhouse on branding for their Un-Convention events, and was subsequently commissioned to design the printed literature for their Roundhouse Music Collective - a series of events aimed at young musicians.

Afrovibes is a biennial festival of arts from South Africa and beyond that toured the UK in 2012. I was commissioned to create an identity for the festival that would work across all printed materials including posters, brochures, flyers and various merchandise items. Sophie Willan is a comedian from Bolton, Greater Manchester. I worked with Sophie on the design of all the print literature for her first touring show The Novice Detective and Stories of Care, a programme she devised to create a childrens story book written and illustrated by children who grew up in care.
